Resumes: Byron Dubois
Work Experience: Intern, Island Resources Foundation, Washington, DC. As one of the first interns to work in the DuPont Circle offices of Island Resources, Byron undertook several research and data organization projects, including:
1) Conducted independent research at the US Library of Congress to increase the Foundation's reference works on vegetative communities of the Eastern Caribbean;
2) Designed and populated a database providing the first detailed catalogue of the extensive collection (over 2000 photos) of Walter M. Hodge, providing photos of most of the islands of the Eastern Caribbean from 1936 to 1952.
3) Consolidated and re-organized 30+ years of bird observations on Sandy Cay, in the British Virgin Islands;
4) Re-organized the Foundation's extensive collections of data, internal reports and gray literature about Sandy Cay;
5) Researched and drafted grant applications for two separate Geographic Implementation Systems for Island Resources. One of these was submitted and immediately received a donation of $4,500 worth of software.
During his intern experience, Byron also volunteered to participate in field studies being conducted by a local watershed association in Maryland. As a result of these activities which documented the polluting practices of a major construction project, the association successfully pressured Anne Arundel Country into issuing a stop work order, and lifting the grading permits for a 170-unit housing project --- only the third time such an action had been taken by the County since 1946.
Student Government President: Achievements included organizing a week-long school-wide food strike that reformed cafeteria practices and enable student government to sell ice cream to fund next year's student government fund. In recognition of his group leadership, Byron was elected president of student council and helped organize many group meetings to define goals and programs for the council.
Down Syndrome Theatre Group: assisted in preparing special education students for a play they perform at the end of the year. Playing roles and interacting with other children contributes to the socialization of the Down's syndrome students, especially in providing them with skills in coping with new people and in reducing their shyness during the performance.
Volunteer veterinarian assistant: Worked four hours a week providing direct care for simple animal treatment and tests. In addition, he observed serious surgical operations. This work study project provided insights into animal health issues, and provided experience in setting priorities between work and school obligations.
