UNEP's Achem Steiner Presents the Green Economy Report
At Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies on Wednesday in Washington, Achem Steiner led a discussion of the United Nations Environment Programme’s new summary report “Towards a Green Economy: Pathways to Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication.” The report presents an in-depth analysis and model projections of the real costs and benefits of transitioning to a green economy.
The “Good News” <–> “Bad News” part of the story is that large, perverse subsidies built into the current economy can be redirected to achieve new goals in sustainability and renewable energy resources. The bad news is that first of all you have to muster the political will to wrest a major portion of the $650 BILLION in annual subsidies from the world’s largest corporations and related interests, from labor unions to catering companies.
