Grenada Newsletter provides date for accession of Grenada to CCA membership

Posted on February 22, 2011

An interesting historical note documenting the membership of Grenada in the Caribbean Conservation Association.
The excerpt scanned below is from page 17 of THE GRENADA NEWSLETTER of February 2nd, 1980, published in St. George’s, Grenada, by Cynthia and Alister Hughes. The Hughes were long-time supporters of the Caribbean Conservation Association, with Alister serving as the Association’s secretary for many years from the 1960’s to 1980’s.
Alister’s second wife, Margaret Hughes of County Wicklow, Ireland, is currently visiting in Grenada, trying to ensure the publication of Alister’s memoir covering the period from the overthrow of Eric Gairy through the trial and imprisonment of about 15 leaders of the New Jewel Movement for the murder of Maurice Bishop and others in 1983. (Leading to the US invasion of October 25, 1983.)
In addition, Margaret is coordinating the publication of copies of THE GRENADA NEWSLETTER with the Digital Library of the Caribbean (DLoC) and the Library of the Grenada extension centre of the University of the West Indies (or Westindies, as Alister insisted). We will notify the CCA e-mail list when that conversion (from mimeo to PDF images) is completed and the technicians from the DLoC have mounted all of the Newsletters on-line with their full metadata.
